COMPANION DETAILED CHARACTER CREATION
Stamos is the leader of a small cadre of elite warriors, on the run from the Latin conquerors, and dedicated to the preservation and ascension of the last Byzantium heir to the island state of Naxos.
3. Virtues & Flaws:
The Charred Watch was once the elite military tacticians and personal guard of the last Byzantium king of Naxos. Charred Men swore fealty to the king in a ritual involving burning and scarification of the facial features. With this sacrifice, they foreswore their own familial and political aspirations and dedicated their lives to the king and his family as soldiers, guards, battle-hardened couriers, alchemists, philologists, and even spiritual advisors.
Vow [Minor Flaw, Personality]
Disfigured [Minor Flaw, General]
Educated [Minor virtue, General]
Following the establishment of the Venetian Duchy of Naxos, in the wake of the Fourth Crusade, Duke Marco Sanudo became the ruler of Naxos and its surrounding islands. It wasn’t until a decade later that Sanudo decided he must purge the court at Naxos of loyal Greeks and kill the native king (then confined to his villa on an island in the bay at Naxos’ capital, Hora). The entirety of the Charred Watch, which still existed as a secret society, was among those sentenced to death. However, some surviving members of the Watch were able to steal away with the king’s infant heir in a daring escape. Now these burned men dedicate themselves to the restoration of the Byzantium throne through the ascension of their ward, Zeno Allectoros.
Dependent [Major Flaw, Story]
Driven [Major Flaw, Personality]
The Watch, with Stamos as their elected leader, has lived in exile for the last fifteen years, never staying long in one place. Despite being on the run, many loyal Greeks in the Cyclades still provide support. Some give political assistance, some send trained servants, and most funnel significant wealth to the outlaw group. Instead of inhabiting a manor, members of Stamos’ band live secretly among the other inhabitants of several small villages on various Cycladic islands. They also inhabit an older bireme dromon with black sails, ballistae, and a front-mounted siphon.
Outlaw Leader [Minor Flaw, Social Status]
Temporal Influence [Minor Virtue, General]
Wealthy [Major Virtue, General]
Like all the Charred Watch, Stamos is a large, tough warrior, one very experienced in combat and well able to handle the defense of his ward.
Large [Minor Virtue, General]
Tough [Minor Virtue, General]
Warrior [Minor Virtue, General]
Before Stamos’ flight from Naxos, he secured from the king’s library two sets of valuable tomes once belonging to Leo IV the Wise. The first set included original relics of St. Lazarus with the translations Leo made of them in Constantinople some four hundred years prior. From bearing these, Stamos received a strong sense of purpose and was the recipient of guidance and visions from St. Lazarus. Second were the copies of Leo’s Tactica, some of the last in all of Greece. These manuals include the secret of how to use and manufacture Greek Fire. Stamos prevented these alchemical formulae from falling into the hands of the Latin and Frankish invaders.
Self-Confident [Minor Virtue, General]
Relic [General Virtue, General]
Visions [Minor Flaw, Supernatural]
Stamos is a hardy fighter, strong and fast in battle. However, his social presence is weak, reflecting a lifetime of service to the king; Stamos spent much of his life standing a silent vigil with a watchman’s helm covering his burned features.
